Dr. Mertz attributes his decision to become a Doctor of Chiropractic after his own crippling injury and recovery due to Chiropractic Spinal Care. When Dr. Gary was 16 years old, he was paralyzed by a football injury. Several bones in his back were broken. The injury caused pressure on his spinal cord due to misalignments known as vertebral subluxation. He was unable to walk or even sit straight up and had no control over his lower body. Doctors told his parents that back surgery was necessary to repair his spine, and that he would never play sports again.
His parents decided to get a second opinion from a Chiropractor. Within a few short weeks of gentle Chiropractic adjustments he was able to get up and walk again. Within 6 months of Chiropractic Rehabilitation he was able to play football and even participated in the California State Championship in springboard diving for his high school swim team. Since his amazing recovery, attributed to Chiropractic care, Dr. Gary and his family have sought to expand the public awareness of this natural approach to healthcare.
Dr. Gary Mertz has two brothers who also became Chiropractors due to sports injuries. Together the three of them have been very influential in the field of Chiropractic. Their inspiration for advancing the field developed into teaching to the profession of Chiropractic. The Mertz brothers have traveled the world teaching spinal adjusting techniques, postural correction, and Chiropractic technologies, philosophies, and sciences. They have taught these methods in Australia, Europe, Central America, and throughout the United States. As leaders in the profession, one of the brothers, Dr. CJ Mertz, is a past President of the International Chiropractic Association (ICA).
